Showing of videos of the 1989 Fire and Flood
In 1989, Luddenden was hit by a double whammy. On the 22nd February, a massive fire at the Oats Royd mill destroyed the 1857 warehouse part of the mill, at right angles to the road, and the northern part of the main mill. Three months later, a massive rainstorm when 7.6 inches of rain fell in two hours on the moor drove a huge amount of water down the valley. This completely inundated the centre of the village and caused a culvert at Brook Terrace to explode and wash away all the gardens right up to the houses
